A movement sweeping across the country is to buy your food within a 100 mile radius of home. While we think that this is an admirable goal, it is often not practical, nor achievable. We personally like the idea of buying and eating seasonally, but in the Rocky Mountain states where snow shuts down the growth cycle for at least six months each year, to purchase fresh it is necessary to buy food that is produced on farms farther away than 100 miles. And as for beef and lamb, quite often the opportunity to buy quality grass-finished meat at reasonable prices does not exist within a 10o mile radius. GrassRoots Meats is fortunate to be able to process meat year round and we are proud to serve customers across the country who have come to appreciate the quality of our meat.

Do you wonder why we do not have online checkout? Many companies build the price of shipping into the cost of the meat, causing the cost per pound of the meat to be much higher. It costs more per pound to ship Express to the east coast than it does to ship Ground to the western states, and we feel that these costs ought to be passed on directly to you for maximum savings rather than averaging them all together. Since the freight rates vary so much from state to state, we bill you on the basis of what we are charged for your particular order, not on a formula that might end up overcharging you for the shipping costs. This makes online checkout impossible.

We also want to maintain a personal relationship with each of you – after all, that is why we are doing what we are doing. It is important that you know who you are buying from —  that we are not a massive corporation with bottom line profit as our primary goal, but a small producer who cares about the health of each and every one of you. This must be a sustainable enterprise and in order for us to continue to serve you we have to make a profit, but we hope that profit is a by-product of doing a good job for you.
